On January 7, 2026, William "Bill" J. Varley passed away at age 71. He was the beloved husband of Deborah Varley; devoted father of Andrew C. Varley; dear brother of the late Robert and Thomas Varley.
Bill was a devoted volunteer and longtime parishioner of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, where his faith and service were central to his life. He gave generously of his time to the church community, serving with the Home School Association and supporting the parish food pantry. His dedication to youth and family extended to Scouting, where he was actively involved with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts Troop 447 of St. Philip Neri. He also served as Treasurer of the Fathers’ Club at Mount St. Joseph High School and was a proud 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, where he held the role of Financial Secretary.
Family was always at the heart of his life. He shared 43 loving years of marriage and cherished time spent with his family, especially camping trips with the Boy Scouts alongside his son. Some of his favorite memories were made at Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation, Calvert Cliffs, and Assateague Island—where the wild horses ate their food.
An avid sports fan, Bill loved trips to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, and faithfully supported his favorite teams: the Baltimore Colts, Washington Capitals, and the Maryland Terrapins, cheering on both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. He also treasured family vacations to Disney World in Florida, creating cherished memories..
Visitation will be held at Gonce Funeral Service, P.A., 4001 Ritchie Highway, on Wednesday (January 14, 2026) and Thursday (January 15, 2026) from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday (January 16, 2026) at St. Philip Neri Church at 12:30 PM followed by interment in Glen Haven Memorial Park.
*Please arrive at Church after 12:15 P.M. because of early school dismissal.
