William “Bill” Patrick Coleman, Jr of Linthicum passed away on October 2, 2025 at the age of 91. He is survived by his brother, David Coleman, two nieces, Amanda McKeon and Tara Miller, and two cousins, Gladys Naylor and Peggy Naylor.
Bill was legendary as a machinist and beloved for his willingness to share his knowledge. He will be missed by many. He and his brother David were owners of Coleman Bros Speed Shop on Route 1 in Elkridge. Together with their good friend and driver, Earl B. Howard, they were called the "Dark Horse from Nowhere" for building one of, if not the, first successful rear engine dragsters and, for a brief span of time, having the world's fastest Chevy at 180mph. Bill later expanded garage space at his life-long home to continue working on engines. In his trademark blue shirt, he was called a mentor by many, a father or grandfather figure by some, and the Godfather of Machinists by all. His knowledge was accumulated over a lifetime of hands-on experience and will never be replaced.
Family requests relatives and friends join them at the family owned Gonce Funeral Service P.A. 4001 Ritchie Highway for a Memorial Gathering on October 13th from 10 AM to 12 PM. Service will begin at 12 Noon.
