Vernon Phillips

Vernon Joseph Phillips Sr. (“Buck”), born September 29, 1945, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life full of love, service, and dedication to his family.

Buck is survived by his children, Michele Phillips (Vincent), Vernon Phillips Jr. (Emmy), and Ann Koonce (Gil). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Brandon Swick, Jordan Swick (Amanda), William Turner, and Sierra Phillips, and a devoted great‑grandfather to Ava, Jackson, Cora, Luka, Dax, Josh, Ellie, Lucy, and Noah. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters—Carol Scott, Barbara MacNamara, David Phillips (Cindy), Jean Fogle, and Thomas Phillips (Vicky)—as well as his brother-in-law Fred Asbury (Colleen) and sister-in-law Debra Custer, along with many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Diana (“Lovey”) Phillips; his parents, William Walter and Dorothy Phillips; his brother, Walt Phillips; his sister-in-law Kay Kaczorowski; and his brothers-in-law Ronald Scott, Joseph Fogle, James MacNamara, James Kaczorowski, and David Asbury.

Buck grew up in South Baltimore with his brothers and sisters, attending St. Mary’s Catholic School where he also served as an altar boy. After high school, he answered the call to serve his country and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965. He spent his time at Fort Carson, Colorado, helping train troops for Vietnam, and was honorably discharged in 1967 as a Sergeant (E-5).

After returning home, Buck spent over 30 years working as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, proudly serving the South Baltimore community. He was recognized as a Million Mile Club member and took on the role of Safety Captain through the USPS National Safety Council.

Buck met Diana, the love of his life, just down the street from where he grew up in the early 1960s. They married on March 23, 1968, and built a beautiful life together over 56 years, centered on love, family, and unwavering support for one another.

He loved spending time at Four Winds Campground, where he made countless memories with family and friends. Buck was happiest surrounded by those he loved—especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him endless joy. He was also a big fan of baseball and football, with fond memories of games at Memorial Stadium, and he never passed up a chance to enjoy good food with family.

Family meant everything to Buck. He will be remembered for his warmth, his sense of humor, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

Family requests relatives and friends visit Gonce Funeral Service, 4001 Ritchie Highway, on Thursday (June 18, 2026) from 3 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM. A Funeral Service will be Friday at 12 PM, followed by interment in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
