Susan D. Murray

Susan D. (Whitelaw) Murray, age 78, of Eldersburg, MD, passed away on March 9, 2023 at Peak Healthcare at Copper Ridge in Sykesville, MD, following her battle with cancer.

Born in Hot Springs, VA, Mrs. Murray was raised in Monterey, VA and Edgemere, MD, a daughter of the late Eugene and Ruby Frances (Smith) Whitelaw. 

She met the love of her life, Edward J. Murray, Jr. while working at Continental Can Company. Susan enjoyed being a homemaker, spending time with family, participating in PTA events and volunteering at school.   Additionally, she enjoyed watching sports, whether watching her boys, grandkids, or professional sports; her favorite teams were the Baltimore Orioles, Washington Capitals and Baltimore Ravens. Her favorite pastimes were playing slots on her iPad and her trips back home to visit in Monterey.

Mrs. Murray was the beloved wife of the late Edward J. Murray, Jr. for 56 years; devoted mother of Edward E. Murray and wife, Khris, and David B. Murray and wife, Tracey; also blessed with grandchildren, Tyler, Travis, Bradley, Allyson and Jason Murray as well as the late Kayla Murray; great-grandchildren, C.J. and Charlie.  She is also survived by her brothers, William and Fredrick Whitelaw. Additional predeceased family members include her brothers, Robert “Bob” and Donald "Tom" Whitelaw.

The family requests relatives and friends to visit Gonce Funeral Service, P.A., 4001 Ritchie Highway, on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 from 6-8 p.m., with a service beginning at 7:30 p.m. 

An additional period of viewing will be made available to Highland County community members from 11- 1 p.m., Friday, March 17th at Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell, Virginia.  A committal service will follow at 2 p.m., in Monterey Cemetery with Father Joseph Daniel Pisano officiating.
