Roger Alphonse Baillargeon was born in Biddeford, Maine on June 7th, 1933 to Cecile D. and Jules E. Baillargeon. He attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School and St. Louis High School in Biddeford, Maine. While attending St Louis High School he played football, played the clarinet in the school band, was active in the glee club, and served as a class officer. He graduated from St. Louis High School in 1952.
Roger attended St. Francis College, now known as the University of New England for a year and then transferred to St. Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont. Prior to his senior year, Roger decided to study for the priesthood through the Society of St. Edmund, however, later he decided to become an Edmundite religious brother. He graduated from St. Michael’s with a dual Master’s degree in Philosophy and Theology. He was an Edmundite Brother for nearly 20 years, teaching at Mindszenty High School in Dunkirk, NY and St Bernard’s High School in New London, Ct.
Roger left the Edmundite Community and shortly after met, fell in love with, and married Regina (Jean) Kernan on May 25, 1974. They began their life together in Hampton Bays, Long Island. Roger continued his career as a counselor at Malloy University in New York. While at Malloy University, Roger began his pursuit of a Masters Degree in Psychology at the University of Rhode Island. Upon graduating he obtained Counseling Certification and continued his counseling career at the elementary, high school, and college levels. Roger always had a love of music and art. At 50 years of age he began taking painting classes and completed a few beautiful watercolor paintings he gifted to friends.
When Roger and Jean retired, they moved to Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, where Roger became active in the community and continued his involvement with music and art, singing in the choir and taking painting classes. Roger was a loving husband to Jean, attentively caring for her as she became frail. After 23 years of marriage, Jean passed away in 1997 following a long battle with diabetes. Roger was devastated and was advised to attend a senior bereavement group.
Attending the bereavement group brought Roger in touch with Olive Heagy, who was grieving the loss of her husband. They quickly became friends realizing they had much in common including their Catholic faith, a career in education, a love for children, and a love of music, theater and art. Their friendship turned into a beautiful loving relationship and the married on August 14, 1999.
Roger and Olive moved to Ocean City, Maryland in 2001 where they pursued their passion for music while singing in St. Luke’s Church choir and Ocean City Choral group. They regularly attended Salisbury Symphony Concerts and Roger would occasionally sing Karaoke. They were active member of the White Marlin Club and active volunteers at Atlantic General Hospital, in Berlin and Ocean City Elementary School, also serving on the board of both. They enjoyed traveling, always preferring to drive and visit friends along the way.
In 2013, Roger and Olive returned to the Western shore to be closer to family and resided in Heritage Harbor Annapolis, a community in which they were very active. They continued singing joining the Heritage Harbor Chorus, singing two concerts a year, St John Neumann choir singing for Sunday masses and playing piano and singing for First Friday Mass. Roger remained active doing what he enjoyed into his late 80’s.
Roger, loved deeply and gave generously. He was a welcoming host to family and friends. He joyfully loved and accepted all of Olive’s family and was an extremely loving, understanding, and kind step-father, step-grandfather, and step-great father.
