Robert E Abend

        Robert E. Abend, 88, of Brooklyn Park, MD passed peacefully at home on April 24, 2022. He is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Patricia A. Abend, his daughter, Melissa M. Virtue, and his son-in-law, Michael T. Virtue Sr. Robert is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Pat Fissel and her husband, Sam, Donna Broseker, Gary Abend, Cliff Ferrin and his wife, Loretta, their children, Kirstie Elgamal and her husband, Moe, and Brady Ferrin, Megan Ferrin and her fiancé, Len Colvin. Robert was born in Baltimore on June 17, 1933 to William Henry Abend and Maude Ella Abend (nee Craig). He was predeceased by his sister, Katherine Broseker, his brother, William Abend and his wife, Charlotte, his sister-in-law, Maryjane Ferrin and her husband, Cliff, and his nephew, Matthew Ferrin.

        Robert loved sports and enjoyed coaching lacrosse for the Andover Apaches, Archbishop Spalding High School, Glen Burnie High School, and football for Mount St. Joseph High School. Robert was a stagehand for Local 19 of I.A.T.S.E. and worked on several feature films, including Tin Men, Avalon, and He Said, She Said. He loved spending his free time working on his small farm, that he nicknamed Windy Hill, and selling his famous pick-your-own strawberries, tomatoes, corn, and many other vegetables. He also loved strumming out a tune on his mandolin and telling everyone bad jokes and odd bits of trivia he had learned. Robert always loved spending summer time vacations with his family in Ocean City, MD and taking long strolls on the beach and boardwalk with his wife and daughter. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was a championship boxer during his service to his country.

        Please visit the family owned Gonce Funeral Service, P.A., 4001 Ritchie Highway, on Saturday (April 30, 2022) from 10 AM to 12 PM, with a service at 12 PM. Mr. Abend will be laid to rest in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
