Hughes, John P.
On December 31, 2020 John Patrick Hughes passed away at age 88. As a young man, the oldest of 10 children raised in South Baltimore during the Great Depression, John left high school early to work and help support his family. Later, he worked for the International Longshoreman's Association for the port of Baltimore 60+ years until his death. For approximately 20 years of that time he served as co-administrator of the Pension and Benefits Fund of International Longshoreman's Association. He and his wife Joan, married for 61 years, were longtime residents of Brooklyn Park. An avid reader, especially of newspapers, John had 6 different newspapers delivered to his home! A devout catholic, Mr. Hughes was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church since 1960, and also belonged to the Knights of Columbus of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. More than anything, he was dedicated to his family and will be truly missed.
Mr. Hughes was the Beloved husband of Joan Scully Hughes; Devoted father of Sharon Wible and husband Tom, John Hughes Jr. "Jack" and wife Debbie, Kevin Hughes and wife Gina, Kathleen Oleszczuk and husband Joe; Loving grandfather of Tommy Wible Jr. and wife Tara, Katie Murphy and husband Mike, Sarah Hughes, Brendan Hughes, Maura, Liam and Meghan Oleszczuk; Blessed with great grandchildren Elizabeth and Nora Murphy. He was the Devoted son of the late John Martin and Mary Lardner Hughes; Dear brother of Eileen Rolka, Maureen Weinholt, Edward Hughes, Richard Hughes, Sheila Franklin and the late Thomas Hughes, Martin Hughes, Michael "Mickey" Hughes and Kathleen Hughes.
Visitation will be held in St. Rose of Lima Church, on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 from 11am to 12 noon. Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon.Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Rose of Lima Church in his name.
