John E. Hautala

      John E. Hautala passed away at age 74 on August 26, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Randi Hautala, his son Chris Hautala and daughter-in-law Christine Hautala, his grandsons Teddy Hautala and Finn Hautala, his sister Priscilla Sansonetti Hautala and brother in law Luigi Sansonetti, five nieces and nephews and nine grand nieces and nephews. He is preceded by his late parents Eino Hautala and Fanny Hautala Vargas and his brother Frank Hautala. 

     John was born in Costa Rica and grew up near the ocean. He moved to the United States and joined the US Coast Guard where he served with distinction for over 20 years, retiring in 1995. His second career was as a marine engineer for a growing company where he continued to work on and around ships. John finally retired for good in 2019 and was overjoyed when his first grandson was born later that year. 

     His passions in life were his family, the sea, travel, great food, helping others with his considerable kindness, making people laugh, and sharing his knowledge on all topics. He could design, build, and fix seemingly anything. His legendary stories came from a lifetime of world travel and adventure. 

     A funeral mass will be held for John at St. Jane Frances church in Pasadena, MD on September 6, 2023 at 11AM.
