On October 20, 2024, Joan M. Ryan passed away at age 91. Born and raised in South Baltimore, Joan was a 1951 Seton High School graduate who married her high school sweetheart, Joseph Ryan, in September of 1951. She worked briefly at Liberty Mutual until the birth of her son, Michael in May 1953. She cherished being a stay home mom to her children Michael and Susan, and enjoyed volunteering at Holy Cross Catholic Church. When Mercy Southern Health Clinic opened its doors, Joan began as a volunteer and was later employed as the front desk secretary. All the neighborhood children knew her as "Miss Joan". Sometime after the clinic closed, Joan transferred to Mercy Hospital as an Information Desk Receptionist, where she worked until she was 88 years old. Craft shows, eating out with family, shopping, and watching Hallmark movies were some of her favorite pass times. Joan loved South Baltimore and her Holy Cross Church community. Everyone knew her as a very loving, family-oriented, and generous woman. She remained in her childhood home on East Hamburg street until she reached the age of 90.
Joan M. Ryan was the beloved wife of 50 years to the late Joseph J. Ryan. She was the devoted mother of Michael J. Ryan and his wife Patricia, and Susan Bowers and her husband Bob. She was blessed with grandchildren Erin and Michael, and great grandchildren Kaitlyn and Ryan. Mrs. Ryan was the dear sister of Carolyn Evans and was survived by nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may visit at Gonce Funeral Service P.A., 4001 Ritchie Highway on Thursday 3 to 5 and 7 to 9pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Holy Cross Church, 106 East West Street, South Baltimore, on Friday at 10 am. Following Mass, Mrs. Ryan will be laid to rest with her husband Joseph in Holy Cross Cemetery.
