James Sebastian Hasselberger Jr., lovingly known as Jim and “Poppy” to his cherished grandchildren, passed away on April 14, 2026, in hospice care. He was 68 years old.
Born on December 5, 1957, in Baltimore, Maryland, Jim was the son of James Hasselberger Sr. and Charlotte Hasselberger. He grew up in South Baltimore and spent much of his life in Baltimore City and Glen Burnie, Maryland. Jim dedicated his career to working as an engineer at the Port of Baltimore, where he was respected for his skill and strong work ethic.
Jim lived a life centered around family, passion, and generosity. He was a devoted father and grandfather who found his greatest joy in spending time with those he loved most.
Jim had a lifelong passion for racing cars and a deep appreciation for all things automotive, including his collection of model cars. Some of his most treasured memories were made traveling with his sons to the race track and to their ice hockey games, proudly supporting them every step of the way. In recent years, his role as “Poppy” brought him immense happiness, and he loved every moment spent with his grandchildren.
Known for his ability to fix just about anything, Jim was always the person others could count on. He had a natural gift for helping people and was generous with his time, knowledge, and heart. Whether it was repairing something broken or simply being there when someone needed him, Jim made a lasting impact on those around him.
Jim is survived by his sons, Chad (wife Caitlin; children Stella, Olivia, and Dean) and Scott (children Justin, Jenna, Jenny, and Jo); his stepmother, Judy Hasselberger; his siblings, Bonnie Bass, Karen Hasselberger, and Ricky Hasselberger; as well as many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, James Hasselberger Sr., and his mother, Charlotte Hasselberger.
A Memorial Gathering to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at Gonce Funeral Service, P.A., 4001 Ritchie Highway, on Wednesday (April 22, 2026) from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M., with a Memorial Service at 12 P.M. Interment will follow in Loudon Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jim’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association. (www.alz.org)
