James Edward Hamilton Sr.

 

Jim Hamilton, age 79, passed away Thursday morning, February 18, 2021 at University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Hospital in Belair, MD. Born in Brooklyn, MD on September 2, 1941 to James Hamilton and Eleanor Hamilton Higgins. Survived by his wife of over 55 years, Marilyn Irene Hamilton; his son, James Edward Hamilton Jr and his wife, Jessica; his daughter, Kristen Noel Hamilton VanOchten and his sister, Mary Beth Hamilton Elmer and her husband, Clay. Also survived by 6 grandchildren: Taylor Ford, Zoe VanOchten, Samantha Hamilton, William (Liam) VanOchten, Devin Hamilton, and Liberty Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved stepfather, William Higgins. 

 

Jim graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from University of Maryland College Park and also a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Johns Hopkins University. Upon graduation from University of Maryland, he was employed by Bethlehem Steel as an electrical engineer for over 30 years when he retired. Jim married his childhood sweetheart, Marilyn, in 1965 at St John's Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, where they were both members.

 

Jim and Marilyn enjoyed traveling all over the world including: England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Italy, Germany, and Austria. They especially enjoyed the many trips, well over 30 years, to Hilton Head Island, SC. They both enjoyed nature, especially watching the birds. You could always find Jim and Marilyn sitting on their front porch together observing birds at their feeders. Private service on Tuesday, February 23rd at Gonce Funeral Home followed by interment at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, Glen Burnie, MD. Online condolences may be sent to the family via the Tribute Wall on this page. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim’s memory may be made to Ladew Topiary Gardens, Monkton, MD, The Salvation Army, or St Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
