Helen Lawhorn Obituary

Lawhorn, Helen L.

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Helen Levon Lawhorn, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who left us peacefully on August 20, 2025, at the age of 89.

Helen was born on December 29, 1935, in Rockbridge County, Virginia, to the late Earnie P. Hinkle and Mary Bane Hinkle. She grew up in the small town of Goshen, Virginia, before eventually settling in Baltimore, Maryland, where she built her life and raised her family.

Helen was a woman of strength, faith, and determination. She worked for many years with Montgomery Ward, A&P, and Super Fresh, earning the respect and admiration of everyone she met. Known for her reliability, kindness, and warm personality, she touched countless lives through her work and her friendships.

She was the devoted wife of the late Russell Lawhorn, who she now joins to live in eternal peace. She leaves behind her loving daughter, Barbara Thomas, her treasured grandson, Bryan Thomas, Jr., and her beloved granddog, Robbie, who brought her joy and stayed faithfully by her side toward the end. She is also survived by her dear sisters, Betty Miller (and husband Jim) of Mt. Solon, VA, and Patricia Robertson of Goshen, VA, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her brothers Homer Donald Hinkle, Bobby Lee Hinkle, Stewart Junior Hinkle, and her special friend Lou Szech.

Helen lived a full and vibrant life, finding joy in the simple things that mattered most—family camping trips, singing hymnals with loved ones and in the church choir, and playing rounds of the card game Rook. And of course, who could forget that signature hairstyle—timeless, immovable, and iconic? It never changed, no matter the decade (or the weather). She was equally known for her strong will—it was her way or no way, and if you didn’t agree, well… bless your heart! These traits, paired with her honesty and sense of humor, made her truly unforgettable.

Her faith was her foundation—a devoted Pentecostal Christian, she never missed a Jimmy Swaggart broadcast. Her strength, love, and presence will be deeply missed, but her legacy lives on through the countless memories she leaves behind.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Helen’s life on Wednesday, August 27, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Gonce Funeral Home in Brooklyn Park, MD.

May she live in peace, reunited with those she loved, and forever in our hearts.
