Charles Francis Conrad, Jr. passed away November 16, 2024 at the age of 92. He was predeceased by his dear wife, Eileen Hughes Conrad (2013) and his three siblings, Peter (2017), Julie Byrne(1989), and Jack (1988).
Charles is survived by daughters, Eileen Jordan (Jon), Nancy Moulder (Stuart), and son, William Hughes; and by 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Charlie or "Boots” was born June 20,1932 to Dr. Charles and Julia Conrad of Arlington, Virginia. He graduated from Washington and Lee High School and served in the US Navy, 1951-1956. He then worked for Bethlehem Steel Corporation until retiring in 1991.
Charlie spent most weekends from age 8 to well in his 80s, at the Southern Maryland farm his father bought in 1941, managing it after his father’s death in 1974. He loved being outside, planting, growing, mowing, or just relaxing and enjoying. Even as his health declined, just viewing the fruits of his labors in his own backyard gave him pleasure.
This sweet gentle man, a charmer always ready with a joke or story, saw every day as beautiful even through the memory loss of illness. He often quoted his favorite character Davy Crockett; "First make sure you're right, and then go ahead". And so he did.
