Schmidt, Barbara C. 

Barbara Gail Chilcoat Schmidt, 80, of Glen Burnie Maryland, passed away on November 26, 2020. 
She was born in Baltimore, Maryland to John and Louise Chilcoat, August 8, 1940. Barbara received her undergraduate degree from Towson University and her masters degree from Loyola College in education. 
Barbara spent her career as an educator in Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties, teaching for almost 30 years at Ridgeway Elementary.  She was a natural born teacher with a presence like an actor commanding the stage.  She loved running into her former students grown up as adults and learning about their lives.  This would happen on a regular basis and it would delight her.  She cared deeply about her students and wanted them to succeed.
In retirement, she enjoyed traveling the world, including such places as Greenland, Iceland, Italy, and Sri Lanka.  Her favorite trips however, were going to Maine each summer with her dear friends and visiting the bears in the north woods of Minnesota. 
She was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic church in Catonsville and volunteered her time helping the Sisters at All Saints Convent.  She was a member of the American Antique Arts Association, serving 2 years as their Secretary.  Her favorite pastime was attempting to fit in as many lunches with as many people in a week as possible.  
She is survived by her son, Matthew K. Schmidt and his wife Marsha Schmidt, her son Nathan Schmidt and his wife Jessica Schmidt, her sister Diana Heisterhagen, and her two nieces, Deborah McGowan and Lori Heisterhagen, one nephew, John, and 2 great-nephews, Corey and Matthew McGowan. 
Due to COVID-19, funeral services will be scheduled at her church as soon as gatherings are safe.  We will be having an online Celebration of Life on Monday, December 7th at 6:30 pm.  Barbara was a passionate defender of the environment and animals.
