Knott, George A. Sr.
On March 7, 2018 George A. Knott Sr. passed away at age 97. George was resourceful, and a hard worker even as a child. His first job, at age 8, was at Hollins Market, chopping the tops of carrots. He did this to have money to feed his pet rabbits. By age 10, he was distributing circulars for Governor Albert Ritchie (for whom the highway is named). This young boy also collected used wine bottles off the streets and sold them to people making moonshine. George started playing baseball at age 13, and completely fell in love with the sport. He played some minor league baseball and then served as a coach until he was 60 years old. George always remained an avid Baltimore Orioles fan. Mr. Knott was a lifetime member of St. Peter the Apostle Church, and attended grade school there. At age 60 he retired from Koppers where he had worked as a painter.
George A. Knott Sr. was the beloved husband of the late Edith Knott, and the late Betty Jane Knott. As an only child himself, he always wanted a big family. This wish was fulfilled as he was the loving father of John “Eddie” Knott, Linda Morgereth, Mary Yockel, William “Bill” Knott, George Knott Jr., James “Jamie” Knott, and Michael Knott and was also stepfather of David Nichols. George was also blessed with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
