Welcome to the memorial page for

Genova M. Luhman

May 1, 1919 ~ August 16, 2016 (age 97) 97 Years Old

Genova (Jenny) Mary Luhman, age 97, died peacefully at home in Glen Burnie, Maryland, on

August 16, 2016.

Jenny was born on May 1, 1919 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Theresia (Tessie) and Anton Kusal.  Some of her fondest memories were of growing up on the family farm.  In 1931, she moved with her family to New York City.  She worked as a hairdresser.  In her father’s candy store in 1937, she met her future husband, John Luhman.  After they married in 1940, they moved to Maryland, where they raised five children.  Jenny was a housewife, but always found ways to supplement the family income.  She worked at the Swift meat packing plant in Baltimore, delivered eggs for a Pennsylvania farmer, and ran a snowball stand built by her husband on their patio.  To this day, there are people who know her as the “snowball lady.” She worked the polls every election and sold green stamps at the Brooklyn Park Elementary School.  She was the taxi for her five children.  As she became blessed with grandchildren, she enjoyed babysitting and taking them on many adventures.

In later years, she worked as a waitress at the Lamppost Restaurant in the GlenBurnie Mall, at McDonald’s, and as a cashier at her daughter and son-in-law’s gas station until age 79.  Over the years, Jenny enjoyed reading, word search puzzles, bingo, game shows, crocheting, duckpin bowling, giving and receiving lottery scratch-offs and playing the slots.  Mostly, she cherished time with her family.  She was quick-witted, had a colorful sense of humor, and enjoyed sharing songs, jokes and stories.

She is survived by daughter Treena Markowski of Linthicum, son John Luhman and wife Diane of Pasadena, daughter Judy Leone and husband Tony of Ocean Pines, son Paul Luhman of Sarasota, Florida, and daughter Julie Secoura of Glen Burnie;  grandchildren Dave Markowski, Jennifer Arnold, Jessica Gerben, Tony Leone, Joe Leone, Paul Luhman, Christa Luhman, Brittany Luhman, Kelly Guercio, Rob Secoura, and Jamie Secoura; ten great-grandchildren; sister Julia Timmons of Carson City, Nevada and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Luhman, parents Tessie and Anton Kusal, grandson Mark Luhman, sister Mary Jankins and brother Anthony (Tony) Kusal.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the family-owned Gonce Funeral Home at 4001 Ritchie Highway, in Brooklyn, Maryland on Wednesday, August 17, from 3:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00.  There will be a mass of Christian burial offered on Thursday, August 18, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 7436 Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard in Glen Burnie.  Interment to follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at 1122 Sunrise Beach Road in Crownsville, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, at 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, Maryland, 21122, whose loving care she received during her final weeks.
